Frankfurt Germany Mission #11
Hallo Alle!
Sorry I didn't send out my own email last week, but Makenna did a better job anyways. As soon as I start to write these, everything just leaves my brain and I forget everything that I did for the past week. All I remember is that my body hurts and I'm tired, but thats a weekly occurrence, so nothing new. Besides that I am having an absolute blast.
This past Saturday we had Elder De Youngs birthday. In the morning it was a pretty normal day, but then we went out to eat at this pizza place that I'm still convinced was Albanian, but apparently it wasn't. All I know is that it was cheap (only like 2-3 euros for like a mini pizza thing) and it tasted real good. Afterwards we went street contacting in normal people clothes (we are allowed to do that once a week), and it felt so weird. You would think it would've easier to talk to people dressed normally, but it was sctually a lot harder. Germans are very direct people so if you are beating around the bush, or arent getting to the point of why you are talking to them, they dont like it (which is understandable).
Sometimes, if not most of the time, we just talk to people to get to know them and talk about stuff, but because we are wearing out missionary nametags they always think we have an alternative motive so they wont talk to us. When we wear our white shirts and dress pants, etc, we just straight up ask people what makes them happy in life, or what their thoughts on God are, and we actually are able to talk to a lot more people like that. We did meet one couple though who were really nice, and the guy spoke really good English, and he actually ended up asking of HE could give us HIS number, and we were a little surprised, but he's a homie so we are excited.
Also this week we had cleaning checks. Our apartment was a bit of a mess, so we really had to go ham with the cleaning. We also had a 12 foot surfboard that Elder De Young and his previous companion, Elder Guyman, picked up off the sidewalk and somehow managed tp get it on the train and take it to the apartment. They also took the foam out of the middle and so that filled up half our room. The only problem is that Germany is very specific with what you do with your trash, and its a bit of a hastle to get rid of anything that can't fit into a medium sized trash bag. We managed to fit the foam in trash bags and stuff them in a dark corner of our keller (basement, which in Germany is essentially a medieval looking jail cell), and just hoped that the senior couple missionaries who do the cleaning checks didnt notice a 12 foot surfboard leaning on the wall in our room. But not only did we end up winning the silver toilet brush for cleanest apartment in the district, but we also got to keep the surfboard (your legacy lives on Elder Guyman).
Today we visited Homburg, where we played frisbee golf, and then we visited the ruins of the castle nearby, which was pretty cool, and as I am writing this we are sitting at a Belgian Chocolate shop waiting to order some waffles (yes I know why are we ordering waffles at a chocolate shop). Also update (5 minutes later) we got ice cream and it was some of the best darn ice cream I have ever had.
We haven't been meeting with a ton of people recently cause everyone has been on summer break and stuff, but in the coming two days we have a total of like 5-6 appointments with people.
Im honestly having such an awesome timeeguys. Besides Elder De Young telling me lies all the time to mess with me (like that he doesnt really feel hunger, and finding out that one was a lie really hurt, but don't worry ill get him back eventually), we have a lot of fun. I have grown so much closer to Jesus Christ and have loved getting to know the people of Germany so much. For a bit of a spiritual thought this week, I have realized that most of the time, we don't know the things we don't know. We should always be seeking to improve, whether that's our relationship with God, our spirituality, our humility , or whatever it is. Because we don't know the things we don't know, in prayer and in life, we should strive to humble ourselves like Jesus was. Humility is so important. It is vital, especially for myself, to stop thinking like I know everything that is best for me, when reality God and Jesus Christ are the only ones who know exactly what's best for me.
Peace out yall
Landon
